Diani Whale Shark Season with Humpback and Turtle Months

Last updated by Diani Excursions Office

The Diani whale shark season occurs from November to March. The highest probability for a whale shark sighting is from January to March, coinciding with the calm Kaskazi monsoon period. These sightings are opportunistic bonuses during other marine excursions, not a guaranteed event.

When is the Best Month to See Whale Sharks in Diani?

The best months to see whale sharks in Diani are January, February, and March. This period is the peak of the Kaskazi season, which provides calm seas and warm water conducive to the plankton blooms that attract these filter feeders.

Whale shark presence is entirely dependent on ocean currents and the availability of plankton. Any encounter is opportunistic, typically occurring during the boat transit to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park. Diani Excursions Office does not operate dedicated whale shark tours because sightings cannot be predicted or scheduled.

When Do Humpback Whales Migrate Past Diani?

The Diani humpback whale season is from July to October. During these months, humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to the warmer East African coast to breed and give birth. This migration period coincides with the Kusi monsoon season.

The Kusi monsoon creates rougher sea conditions, and humpback whales are usually seen far from shore. A sighting is rare. We do not offer specific whale-watching tours, and any encounter is an infrequent bonus during other marine activities.

When Can You See Sea Turtles in Diani?

Sea turtles are present in Diani waters throughout the year. Green and Hawksbill turtles are the most common species sighted during snorkelling at Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park. They are often observed feeding on seagrass or near the coral reef on a Wasini and Kisite day trip.

The South Coast is a key nesting area for sea turtles, with a peak nesting season typically from March to May. Funzi Island is a significant nesting site where local conservation projects protect nests. A Funzi Island tour supports the communities involved in these conservation programmes.

Which Diani Excursions Offer Marine Life Sightings?

Diani Excursions Office does not run tours that specifically target whale sharks or humpback whales. Our established marine packages provide the possibility for such encounters as an opportunistic bonus.

  • Wasini Island and Kisite Marine Park Day Trip: This tour offers the highest probability of marine life sightings. The itinerary includes dolphin watching and snorkelling at the Kisite Mpunguti coral reefs, where turtles are frequently seen. The boat journey provides the opportunity for a chance whale shark encounter during the November-March season.
  • Glass-Bottom Boat Tour: This tour allows guests to view the reef and fish of the Diani-Chale Marine Reserve without entering the water. Encounters with very large marine animals are unlikely on this local reef trip.

How to Behave Safely Around Marine Animals in Diani

All guests must follow Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) guidelines and crew instructions during any marine animal encounter. These rules protect both the animals and the passengers.

  • Keep Your Distance: Never attempt to touch, ride, or chase any marine animal. Maintain a respectful distance of at least 10 metres for whale sharks and 50 metres for whales.
  • Do Not Feed Wildlife: Feeding marine animals disrupts their natural behaviour and can make them ill or dependent on humans.
  • Approach Slowly and Quietly: Our boat captains are trained to approach animals cautiously from the side and to cut the engine when near.
  • No Flash Photography: Disable your camera's flash, as sudden lights can startle marine animals.
  • Follow Crew Instructions: The boat captain and guides provide instructions to ensure guest safety and animal welfare. Adherence to these coral and marine life protection rules is mandatory.

Are Diani Marine Animal Sightings Guaranteed?

No, sightings of any wild marine animal in Diani are not guaranteed. The animals are in their natural habitat and their movement depends on seasons, food sources, and ocean currents. All sightings involve an element of chance.

Kisite Mpunguti excursions have a high probability of dolphin sightings, but this is not certain. Tours are scheduled during optimal seasons to increase the likelihood of sightings. The core activity of the tour is snorkelling on the reef, with large animal sightings considered an infrequent bonus. More information is available on why Wasini dolphin sightings are not guaranteed.

What is Diani's Role in Whale Shark Conservation?

The Diani coast is a significant site for marine research. The seasonal presence of whale sharks allows marine biologists to study their migration and population dynamics. This research helps to inform conservation policies regarding threats like ship strikes and pollution.

Data from responsible tourist encounters contributes to this scientific work. Booking with a licensed local operator supports tourism that cooperates with conservation authorities and KWS. This model demonstrates the economic value of a healthy marine ecosystem.
