Tiwi Beach at a Glance

Tiwi Beach is a quiet stretch of sand and reef north of the Kongo River, separate from Diani Beach, best known for the rock pools that drain at low tide. Starfish, small reef fish and sea urchins fill the pools, and one natural pool is shaped like the map of Africa. Fewer hotels and fewer people make it calmer than central Diani.

Our Tiwi starfish reef walk takes you to the rock pools with a guide at low tide.

Getting to Tiwi Beach from Diani

Tiwi Beach is 11.5 km by road from the Ukunda junction, because the drive goes back through Ukunda to the Tiwi turn-off rather than across the Kongo River mouth. The straight-line distance is only 5.9 km. At low tide you can also walk north across the river mouth from the Kongo Mosque entry.

Driving to Tiwi Beach

Take the Ukunda road to the A14, head north towards Mombasa and leave the highway at the Tiwi turn-off. The drive takes about 20 minutes from central Diani.

Walking from the Kongo Mosque Entry

The low-tide walk crosses the sand at the river mouth. Start back before the tide turns, because the channel fills quickly and the current runs hard.

Map of Africa Pool and the Tiwi Rock Pools

The Map of Africa pool is a natural rock pool on the Tiwi reef flat whose outline looks like the African continent when the tide drops. Guides lead visitors across the reef to it and to the starfish pools nearby. The pools show only for a few hours around low tide.

Reef Life in the Tiwi Pools

  • Cushion and brittle starfish
  • Sea urchins, so step on sand, not rock
  • Small reef fish, crabs and sea cucumbers

Starfish Rules at Tiwi

Look but do not lift. Starfish lifted out of the water can suffocate, so photograph them where they lie. Do not stand on coral or turn over rocks.

Best Time to Visit Tiwi Beach

The best time to visit Tiwi Beach is around low tide, when the reef flats drain and the rock pools, starfish and the Map of Africa pool show. The low tide time moves later each day, so check the tide table for your date. Spring tides around the full and new moon drain the reef furthest.

Best Months at Tiwi

December to March gives the calmest sea and the clearest water in the pools. July to October is windier, so the shallows are rougher on the incoming tide. The Kenya Meteorological Department expects above-average short rains from mid-October to early December 2026.

Tiwi Beach Reef and Lagoon

A fringing coral reef runs offshore along Tiwi and acts as a natural breakwater, so the water inside it is calm and shallow at most tides. The reef flat drains at low tide to form the rock pools. Outside the reef the swell is stronger, so swim inside the lagoon.

Swimming at Tiwi

Swim at mid to high tide, when the lagoon is deep enough and the pools are covered. Avoid the river mouth channel to the south on a falling or rising tide, where the current runs hard.

Tiwi and the Dongo Kundu Bypass

Tiwi stayed less developed than Diani for decades. The Dongo Kundu bypass from the Mombasa mainland now cuts the drive from the airport and the SGR, so more visitors and new stays are arriving.

Staying at Tiwi Beach

Shops and restaurants are limited, so most guests drive to Ukunda for supplies. Tuk-tuks and taxis reach Tiwi from Ukunda town.

Tiwi Beach Safety

Go with a local beach guide on the reef, agree the guide fee before you set off, and start back before the tide turns. The pools hide sea urchins and sharp rock. Tiwi is quieter than central Diani, so walk in a group and leave valuables at your hotel.

Reef Walk Safety

  • Reef shoes, not bare feet
  • Step on sand rather than coral
  • Watch the tide and the river mouth channel
  • Sun protection, the reef flat has no shade

Personal Safety at Tiwi

Avoid empty stretches after dark and keep phones out of sight on the beach. Book activities at a listed price rather than on the sand.
