Kongo River Canoe Versus the Wasini Traditional Dhow

Kongo River Sunset Canoe Ride
The Kongo River sunset canoe leaves at 4:00 pm, with a captain standing at the stern who poles the canoe upriver. The canoe has no engine and guests do not paddle, so the estuary stays quiet and the birds stay close. You sit and watch the mangroves, then drift back as the light goes.
The Mango-Wood Canoe and Its Captain
- The hull is a dugout carved from a single mango tree trunk, with side outriggers (ngalawa style) for stability.
- Guests sit inside the canoe; nobody is asked to paddle.
- The captain stands at the stern and pushes off the riverbed with a long pole.
- Children wear life jackets and ride with an adult; non-swimmers stay with a guide.
Wildlife on the Kongo River
The river mouth and the mangrove roots hold prawns, crabs, small fish and many mangrove birds. The Kongo River has no hippos or crocodiles. The Kongo River guide covers the mosque, the beach and the tides at the mouth.

Sea Conditions on the River and the Channel
The Kongo River is sheltered and flat, and the Wasini dhow crosses open water that gets rough in the kusi months from about June to September. Calm water from December to March gives the smoothest dhow ride and the clearest snorkelling. The canoe runs on flat water all year.
Seasickness on the Wasini Dhow
Guests who get seasick do best near the middle of the dhow, looking at the horizon, with a light breakfast and a tablet taken before the boat leaves. Our seasickness guide for the Wasini dhow explains the kusi season in detail.
Tides and Safety on the Kongo River
The canoe leaves at 4:00 pm so it is back at the river mouth by about sunset. Our Kongo River safety guide explains the late-afternoon timing and the vetted canoe captains.
Choosing the Canoe or the Dhow
The canoe suits a short stay, young children and a quiet sunset, and the dhow suits snorkellers and dolphin watchers with a full day free. Many guests do both on different days. Pick by the time you have and how you feel about open water.

Pairing Both Trips in One Stay
Plan the two trips on different days. The Wasini dhow returns to Diani at 5 to 6 pm, after the canoe has left at 4:00 pm. A rest day between them works well for families.
