Getting to Chale Island

The mainland point is 17.7 km by road from the Ukunda junction on Diani Beach Road, then tractor or boat depending on the tide. No other landing exists, so a day visit is arranged through the resort or a booked trip. Allow extra time for the crossing both ways.

Tractor and Boat Crossing

At low tide the resort runs a tractor across the exposed flats. At high tide the same crossing is made by boat.

Things to Do on Chale Island

Chale Island day visitors mostly come for the mangrove boat ride, the beach and lunch, all arranged through The Sands at Chale Island or a booked trip. The island also holds sacred forest shrines, which visitors should respect.

Mangrove Boat Ride to Chale

The boat follows the mangrove channels at high tide. On a shallow channel the crossing may switch to the tractor.

Combining Chale with Gazi

Gazi village and its mangrove boardwalk are about 5 minutes by boat from Chale and 20.0 km by road from the Ukunda junction.

Best Time to Visit Chale Island

Plan the day around the tide rather than the clock, because the tide decides whether you cross by tractor or by boat. The crossing time moves every day. Ask us for the tide times on your date before you book.

Chale Island Safety

Do not try to wade across the channel on your own, because the water comes back quickly when the tide turns. Wear reef shoes on the flats and around the rocks. Carry water and sun protection, and follow the resort staff and the boat crew.
