Diani Beach Public Access Guide

You can reach Diani Beach free through public access roads such as Trade Winds and the Kongo Mosque entry, or pay for a hotel day pass that includes beds, towels and food credit.

  • Free public access roads
  • Hotel day passes with checked prices
  • Distances from the Ukunda junction

Public access and hotel gateways

Kwale County built public access roads along Diani Beach. They are free. Hotels along Diani Beach Road also act as gateways: some sell day passes with food credit, some let non-guests use the beach bar, and some do not publish any day pass. Each access point below has its distance by road from the Ukunda junction.

Diani Beach Public Access and Your Rights

The beach itself is public; what hotels control is the land between the road and the sand. In July 2026 the Kwale Environment and Land Court ruled that a Diani public access parcel, Block/1072, goes back to the Government, which keeps that corridor open for the public. Use the county access roads and paths listed here, and you never need a hotel pass just to reach the water.

Getting to the Diani Beach Access Roads

All the access points leave Diani Beach Road (C213), which runs behind the hotel strip from the Kongo Mosque in the north to Galu in the south. The distances on this page start at the Ukunda junction, where the road from Ukunda town meets Diani Beach Road. A taxi or tuk-tuk can drop you at any access road.

The Kongo Mosque entry has a county access road, toilets and parking, and Trade Winds is an organised free public beach with amenities. Tiwi, in the far north, is reached through Ukunda and the Tiwi turn-off (11.5 km by road), because there is no road crossing at the Kongo River mouth.

Best Time for a Diani Beach Day

The tide changes Diani Beach more than the clock does. Around low tide the water pulls back from the shore, the rock pools and the Robinson Island sandbank appear, and the boats time their trips for this window. Around high tide the water comes up to the sand again. Check the tide for your date, or ask us on WhatsApp, before you plan a beach day around a boat trip or a rock-pool walk.

The Kenya Meteorological Department expects above-average short rains on the coast from mid-October to early December 2026, mostly in short showers, so beach mornings usually stay usable.

Things to Do From the Public Beach

You do not need a hotel to book a trip from the beach. From the main Diani Beach you can take the glass bottom boat to the sandbank (KES 2,000 per adult with a Kenyan ID, USD 40 for international visitors), a 15-minute jet ski ride (KES 10,000 or USD 100 per adult) or a 30-minute camel ride along the beach (KES 2,000 or USD 40). From the Kongo Mosque entry, the Kongo River sunset canoe starts at 4:00 pm (KES 2,000 or USD 25 per adult).

Diani Beach Access Safety

Use the organised public beaches with lockers, such as Trade Winds, or leave valuables at your hotel. Confirm day pass terms at reception before you pay, because hotels change them.

Beach operators and touts

On the public beach you will be offered boat trips, rides and tours. A polite "no, thank you, I have booked" is enough. Book at a listed price before you pay anything, and ask what is included, because a cheap quote often leaves out fuel, park fees or safety gear. Our guide to beach boy quotes and official prices shows what to check.

Diani Beach Public Access Guide FAQs

Use a public access road. Trade Winds is an organised free public beach in central Diani, the Kongo Mosque entry at the north end has a county road, toilets and parking, and in Galu there is the lane beside Almanara. You do not need a hotel day pass to reach the sand.

The Diani Reef day pass is KSh 2,500 per person, of which KSh 1,500 is redeemable on food and drinks, with access until 5 pm. Baobab Beach Resort day passes start at KES 7,000 for residents and KES 11,500 for non-residents with meals. Other hotels change their terms, so confirm at reception.

The beach is public. Hotels own the land behind it and control their own gates, but the county access roads are free and open to everyone. In July 2026 the Kwale Environment and Land Court returned a Diani public access parcel, Block/1072, to the Government.

Yes, at some of them. The Kongo Mosque entry at the north end has a county access road, toilets and parking, and Trade Winds is an organised public beach with amenities. Smaller paths have little or no parking, so a taxi or tuk-tuk drop-off is easier.

Say a polite no and walk on. Book boat trips, jet skis and camel rides at a listed price before you pay, and ask what the price includes. A quote on the sand often leaves out fuel, park fees or safety gear. Keep valuables in a locker or at your hotel.

Use the lit, staffed points such as Trade Winds and the Kongo Mosque entry, and avoid empty lanes after dark.
